Scotch Whisky Network

A social network of people who love Scotch Whisky

I'm hoping to use the blog area to do some whisky reviews where the whole community can select a whisky of the month and then as a collection everyone can submit their thoughts, feeling and opinions on the whisky.
All ideas gratefully received.

Obviously, my favourite whisky changes all the time depending on factors like the weather, what sort of day I've had and what my current budget is, ahem. But at the moment I am really enjoying a BenRiach Curiositas 10 Year Old. It is malty on the nose with that wonderful smell of a smokehouse preparing some of my favourite kippers; beautifully sweet and malty with the oak just drying up towards the end; the finish is long and luscious with a sweet touch of creme brulee lightening the smoke. The 21 Year Old "Authenticus" has all the same character, but you can't beat the value represented by the "Curiositas".

Not tried this one... yet. Just been online to have a look at teh rpices and will make some calls tomorrow to see where I can locate a bottle of this at a good price. At the moment I'm nursing my way through my last bottle of the Glenmorangie Port cask - I am loathe to finish it without a decent occasion as its becoming a real pain to get it a decent price. Alongside that I'm going through a phase of drinking the Talisker 18 year old. Whish goes great with Oysters I found last week.

I have to say that I am a BIG fan of Glenfarclas, but also those whiskies from north of Inverness: Pulteney, Clynelish, Dalmore, Glenmorangie, Balblair, Teaninich, but it's horese for courses and I can enjoy almost any, depending on the mood. Ben Nevis, Bruichladdich, Springbank, Aberfeldy, the list is fairly long.

The Glenfarclas is one of those malts that I love to recommend to people, I've never had a bad reaction! To my taste it the quality peaks in the 15 year old with that lovely bitter chocolate finish. It goes to show that you don't need to break the bank to get a fantastic whisky. I must say though, a friend once gave me a bottle of the 16 year old Balblair and I fell in love (with the whisky not with the friend - I don't think the wife would be too chuffed if I traded her in for a younger model!).

Yes, the 15 has long been my favourite, although, having said that, John Grant changed the flavour profile of the 21 yo around the mid-90s and it improved dramatically. Their older (sorry, more mature) bottlings - the 30 & 40 yo - are pretty wonderful, but the prices make them something of a very, very, very special occasion dram!

I just had a quick look in google for the 30 and 40 year old Glenfarclas you were talking about.. Is there a huge difference between them as the price is vastly different from what I could see.

For my full tasting notes, buy a copy of the new edition of The Malt Whisky File - please? But the 30yo is, in my opinion, the driest of Glenfarclas's bottlings, The 40 yo is more complex and richer, with a maltiness on the finish and some liquorice/fennel allied to the honey and beeswax, it is smooth and buttery, while the 30yo is more cough linctus and citrus oil.
So, yes, there is quite a big difference. The 40 is more what you would expect from the Grants, while the 30 goes off at a wee tangent from the norm.

Have just ordered a copy from Amazon - as my local WH Smith said it would take three weeks to arrive! If anyone wants to go and buy a copy of Johns book you can get it here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Malt-Whisky-Tucek-Robin-Lamond/dp/1841950726

I only have one favorite....... at a time! My favorite has to be Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Caol Ila, Bruichladdich, Springbank (any), Balvenie, Ardbeg, and Glen Rothes and Highland Park, and and and. Stay tuned for a new Islay malt to take the world by storm: Kilchomen.

Until now I have my no. 1 whisky, that is a Talisker (G&M) from 1955 (40 years old) 53,6%vol. I´m still looking for a successor, but that is really a hard job ;-)
Beside my No. 1 I have always my seasonal whisky – that is now for the summertime a 12 years old Glendullan from the 70th – collecting is good, but to enjoy a great whisky better!

I have no one favourite because there simply are too many good whiskies in this world. Well not TOO many - there can never be too much of anything regarding whisky :D

Right now I'm totally favouring Ardbeg's Supernova though. Oh my sweet maker what a great whisky!
