Are you all aware that the laws are to change?
We will shortly have written into statute thegeographical delineation of Lowland, Highland, Speyside and Islay. They may even (but it is unlikely) break Highland up further into Northern Highland, Western Highland, Eastern Highland and Perthshire. There will also be a statutory categorisation of Blended Whisky, Single Malt Whisky, Blended Malt Whisky, Single Grain Whisky and Blended Grain Whisky. See attached or go to http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/whisky-regs08/index.htm. It's too late to do anything about it now, but you can see what has been proposed by the SWA. The consultations dragged on into June and there was a LOT of dispute about whether they would or wouldn't allow Blended Malt Whisky. I don't, at this stage know what the outcome is, but Defra are due to come out with a white paper in September.
